From Ripoll to Sant Joan along the Ruta del Ferro (the Iron Route)

To vist Ripoll is to step back into history.  Its monastery, the symbol of the town, is one of the most beautiful and evocative buildings in Catalonia. The ached doorway, candidate to the Unesco World Heritage Site, the basilica and the cloisters, form a unique architectural site, to be enjoyed by those moved by art and architecture.

From here one can follow the Ruta del Ferro (the Iron Route) and the Ruta del Carbó (the Coal Route) on foot or by bike, that follow the footprint of the old train track. This route gives us insight into the importance of the tradition of the ironworks of the lower Ripollés region and the mining of coal at Ogassa.

As you come into Sant Joan de les Abadesses (Saint John) you’ll soon notice a vibrant, cultural municipality with lots to do such as:

  • The Abbey Palace
  • The Monastery of Sant Joan de les Abadesses
  • The old town
  • The church of Sant Pol (Saint Paul)
  • The ancient bridge
  • Sant Miquel (Saint Michael) of the Infirmary.
