Great Site of France – Canigó Massif and Foothills

General information:
The Massif and Balconies of Canigó, declared a Grand Site of France since 2012 and renewed for the period 2025-2032, is an emblematic massif of the Catalan Pyrenees located in the Pyrenees Orientales (Occitanie). Landscape, identity and heritage

Visible from the Mediterranean, Canigó is a sacred mountain for the Catalans, a symbol of identity and resistance. Its landscapes, shaped by centuries of agroforestry and pastoral activities, offer an exceptional diversity between peaks, valleys and foothills.

Access:
The two sites, located in the heart of the Canigó massif, are accessible by various means of transport, although mainly by road:

  • Train: The nearest SNCF train station is in Prades (for Sant Miquel de Cuixà) and in Perpignan (for Prats de Molló). From Perpignan, there are daily TER trains to Prades, followed by road connections.

  • Plane: Perpignan-Ribesaltes Airport (1–1h15 by road), with national and international connections. Girona (Spain, 1h45) and Barcelona (2h30) airports are also accessible.

  • Car: From Perpignan, it takes approximately 1 hour to reach Sant Miquel de Cuixà and 1h30 to reach Prats de Molló via the Tec Valley. Parking is available near both sites.


These access points combine intermodality (train + coach) and individual mobility, with a growing focus on low-carbon alternatives.
