Its church is one of the Jewels of Catalan Romanesque Art, the ‘Extremely Saintly Mystery’ or  Santíssim Misteri,’ a historic must for pilgrimage.    Founded in 885 by  Guifré el Pelós and led by his own daughter, Emma, and the Abbot Oliba was greatly influential in obliging the convent to cease to be for women, due to the accusation that the nuns were leading a dishonest life.

The Benedictine Monastery was active from the 10th century to 1835.  It was the most influential religious centre of the Camprodon Valley, and one of the most active of the Girona Pyrenees.

It is included as a listed and protected site (Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional (BCIN) in the Inventory of Catalan Architectural Heritage.

The church is documented as dating from the 10th century. The main doorway, as well as another doorway fashioned in the style of the ancient architectural school of Rosselló, give credit to this fact.
